Ethernet smart bob
« on: March 25, 2015, 01:02:08 AM »
Are there currently plans to build an ethernet motion control board? I thought I read something about it on here a few days ago but can't seem to find it now. Pmdx-426 Maybe? If yes is there an ETA on it? I am retrofitting a mill and would rather use ethernet if I could. Also I thought I read it had more i/o's witch would make things nice for my build.

OK, I guess I have delayed answering this about as long as I can.

Yes, there is going to be an Ethernet version of the SmartBOB series
of Mach4 compatible controllers. It will be called the PMDX-426.

Way back when, we thought we might be able to demo it at the
Cabin Fever show on 11 April 2015. Like many engineering projects,
things are not going as fast as we would like. The hold up is not
the Ethernet interface. We had that working on an earlier demo
board at Cabin Fever last year.

The current status is that we are struggling with how to package
so many functions (and therefore connectors) into the size of case
that we have been hoping to use. As a stepping stone we have
done a printed circuit board that is a mechanical test with all the
connectors. This mock up is planned to be with us at the Cabin
Fever show. It also has several new circuits we need to test
before committing them into the new design.

Our current projections are to have the first running units by the
time of the CNC Workshop in June.

The PMDX-426 will have full 24 volt compatible I/O, more I/O signals
than a PMDX-126, and includes an on-board VFD interface and lots of
other functions. The internal power supply and electromechanical relays
will still be included. There will be an expansion interface for even more
I/O, an operator's panel, and other future add-ons.

The target price is somewhere in the $300 to $400 range. This can
be compared to $411 for a PMDX-126, a PMDX-107 spindle speed
controller, and an Ethernet Smoothstepper, and that does not
count the ribbon cables and a power supply for the SmoothStepper.

Thanks for the reply Steve that helps with my planning I already have a warp 9 ess but I'm getting impatient waiting for their plug in to be done. It seems like you guys are a little more on top of your game. I may just have to run mach 3 till the 426 is ready then jump ship.

Just came looking at the state of Mach 4, which I've avoided, and PMDX. I see this thread. We're a week and a half from the CNC Workshop, which I will NOT be attending, unfortunately. Are you still on track with the PMDX-426 for the CNC Workshop? Just curious as this WILL be the catalyst to get me to look into Mach4, a license for which I purchased months (or has it been years?) ago!!! I have to have Mach4 do all the things I currently do with Brains, macros, and an old Pokeys for buttons, before I can consider moving over. I figure PMDX will make most of that painless so I'm glad to wait.

Update to PMDX-426 schedule.... many things have conspired to delay our progress. Currently we are hoping to have running prototypes by late September 2015.

Any news on the PMDX-426?  I'm planning on making the jump to MACH4 soon and was wondering if I should wait till the PMDX-426 is released.

We are working hard on this.... honest.

The number of features on this board has proven quite a challenge to
packaging and circuit board layout. Currently we have managed to
do a proof of connectability layout and are now cleaning that up to
be something actually suitable for fabrication. When it goes out for
prototype board build, I will announce it. From there we are looking
at a couple of months to have basic usable firmware and plugins
running.
