PMDX-126 - How to connect up spindle controller to K1 Relay
« on: October 12, 2015, 07:55:11 AM »
Hi all,

I have a PMDX-126 and ESS.  I have all the drives working but struggling to understand how I connect the spindle controller (Lenze 534), to the K1 relay.  Is there anyone that can point a newbie in the right direction?

I have (hopefully), attached a photo showing the spindle control board.

Regards

Steve

I have not been able to find technical information on the DCTV-2 board show in your photo.
It appears to be mounted to the side of the Lenze 534. There is info on the bare Lenze 534
unit. See the PDF file here:

www.lenze.org.ua/pdf/530_Speed_controllers_1202_EN.pdf

This document seems to indicate that you can turn the speed controller on and off using
relay contacts attached to terminals 16 and 17 as shown on page 27 of the manual.

Thanks Steve

That makes sense but  am I right that the spindle speed is change in proportion to the 0-10v input. Would this be across pins 7,8 and 9 in diagram?

If I understand the Lenze manual correctly, the control voltage is
expected to range from 0 to 10 VDC with the following connections:

Pin 7 - common, or Agnd on the PMDX-107
Pin 8 - control voltage, Aout on the PMDX-107
Pin 9 - reference voltage, Aref on the PMDX-107

I would recommend that you use a meter to verify that the voltage between
pins 7 and 9 is indeed 10 volts DC before connecting a PMDX-107.

Hi Steve,

Looking at my machine the 534 Lenze contacts are bridged between pins 16 and 17 so the device must be controlled from the other board (the one in the photo), I assume it's some kind of switch although I cant understand why it needs 240v ac.

However assuming I bypass this board and connect straight to the Lenze checking the terminals as stated.  Can you confirm do I need to be connecting up the rev/dir, fwd/run and com connectors and also using the K1 relay?  Are there any schematics showing some basic examples of the wiring of a 126 and the 107 board?

Regards

Steve

Looking at the Lenze 534 manual, the connection that I have suggested
corresponds to the diagram in section 6.1.1 whereas it sounds like the
add on board uses the alternate connection method shown in the 6.1.2
diagram. Either will work, but the PMDX-107 needs the 6.1.1 connection
style.

When using the PMDX-107 you would connect the COM and FWD/Run
terminals to pins 16 and 17 of the Lenze. The only connection to
pin 7 would be the Agnd from the PMDX-107.

The K1 relay is not used in the above configurations.

Reversing the spindle with this type of driver is not recommended because
it requires a timed decelleration sequence and a large set of relays to
switch the armature wires. Incorrect sequencing will kill the Lenze.

Thanks Steve,

I shall have another look this evening.  Incidentaly there is what I assume to be a decent quality reversing switch already wired up (photo attached), hence the reason why I was hoping just to leave the Lenze, reversing switch all wired in situ with the hope of just connecting to the 'simplatron DCVT-2 board'.  Out of interest one of the wires that goes into the simplatron DCVT-2 board (grey wire), comes from what is called 'spindle analogue', could this wire be looking for some form of PWM input?  If so could I tap straight into it from the 107?

I wish I could answer your latest question, but I have been unable to find any documentation on the DCVT-2 board. It was marketed by Lenze and likely has something to do with controlling the reversing, but I really don't know how to use it.

Hi Steve,

I have moved forward with things since last communication.

On the original M/C board which I have retained within the machine  I have worked out which switch wires are required for the spindle reverse (they are direction and common).  I was wondering could I connect these to the PMDX 126 board and have a switch mach3 for the M3 and M4 command?

Also, I have worked out how to power up the spindle, itwas as simple as applying a DV voltage to the grey wire on the original board.  I am currently applying 12v.

Hi Steven,

You can configure Mach3 so that the spindle direction controls the K2 relay, but
I still worry about reversing while the motor is still spinning, and I cannot offer
any specifics to wire things to your undocumented board.

Hi Steve,

I have bought mach4. I have everything setup and connected to my 107 board as per below:-

Aout - lenze Ana 0-10v
Agnd - common
Com - common back to relay
Rev/dir - dir relay switch (12v),

I can confirm when connecting both the common and 12v relay switch wires it flicks the reverse relay.

I can get spindle running in forward direction but I'm not sure what settings I need to activate in mach4 for reverse. The only relay I can get to operate is the fwd/run on the pmdx as I can see the led light.
