PMDX-422 with PMDX-407 Setup Not Working
« on: December 26, 2016, 08:00:33 PM »
I'm having trouble getting my spindle motor to run.  I've got the following setup:

PMDX 422  (connected to 3 axis motors which seem to jog correctly)
PMDX 407
Haunyang VDF (works from the front control, but not from PMDX control)
1.5HP 3 phase motor

I have configured the Mach 4 and the 422 plug in as shown in the below screen shots.

The connections from the PMDX 407 to the VDF are as follows:

A ref to 10V on VDF
A out to V1 on VDF
A  gnd to AMC on VDF
Run Com to DMC on VFD
Run  to V1 on VDF

On the Mach4 screen when the cw spindle button is selected with the slider at 100% a click is heard on the PMDX 422.   The led on PMDX 422 near K1 lights.  Neither led on the 407 lights. The spindle motor does nothing. There is 10 vdc at Aref and .335 VDC at Aout.  There seems to be .335 VDC @ Aout at all times.

PD001 is set for external terminal
PD002 is for board potentiometer and external potentiometer.
PD070 is set for 0-10v range

Your screen shot shows that you have the PMDX SmartBOB configured
for PWM output on pin 16 as for a PMDX-126/107 combo.

You should have selected the option for PMDX-407, third on the list.
When you do this the other options below will grey out because they
are pre-configured for the PMDX-407.

It is also likely that you will be happier if the Spindle RPM Measurement
and Reporting is set to Echo Commanded RPM.

Lastly, your VFD setup and wiring look OK, except you show the RUN
from the PMDX-407 connected to the VI of the VFD. This looks likely
to be a typo.

On your Spindle setup table in Mach4, you show 2400 RPM as the
minimum speed. This table entry is used by Mach4 to compute the
PWM needed  and should be  0 unless you have your VFD configured
to produce 2400 RPM with 0 volts on the input.

If you are trying to set a minimum operating speed for running the
spindle (say for fan cooling, or low speed torque issues) then you
should do this with the minimum PWM setting in the PMDX-407
configuration. A setting of 10% would produce a minimum operational
speed of 2400 RPM.

Thanks for your fast response. You are correct in assuming that Run is not connected to V1.  My message should have stated (Run to For).  I have selected the 407 option, third on the list and selected the Echo Commanded RPM reporting.  In the Mach4 configuration I have changed the min. speed to 0.0
I executed both  the M3 Sxxxx  command and the Spindle speed button with the same results no (spindle movement).  When executing the spindle command or using the spindle button,  K1 and DS4 led illuminate on the 422 board.  Neither the Run or PWM Leds on the 407 board illuminate.  I believe that the Run and Run Com are suppose to be connected to a solid state relay and close.  I don't think this is happening because I can measure 24VDC between them regardless of the on/off spindle command state.  Also on the AOUT terminal there is .359 VDC at all times regardless of the spindle on/off state.  Thanks again

Please create a "packaged profile" in Mach4 and send it to us
via private email. You will find this function under Help > Support
in the Mach4 menu.

Steve Stallings: I sent the package profile VIA private email, did you get it?

Your profile was tested today and found to be working on our test rig.

I did need to set the home and limits to Active Low, but that does not
mean that your config is wrong, only that it is different from ours.

I noticed that you have configured Spindle On to drive Pin 1. This is not
necessary because the PMDX-407 provides an output to turn the spindle
on.

The PWM indicator and the Run indicator on the PMDX-407 should respond.

Things to try include:

1) Check that JP1 is in the ON position to supply power to the PMDX-407
through pin 26 of J2. (bet this is the issue, I forgot to mention this before).

2) Double checking that the PMDX-407 is correctly oriented and registered
in the header on your PMDX-422 board.

3) Temporarily configure the PWM output to drive Pin 16 and use the
Real Time Signal monitor from the Plug-In configuration panel to
see if Pin 16 turns yellow to indicate pulses when the spindle is
     started.

I have not tested the home but I know the machine will stop as soon as it reaches any of the limit switches.  I'm not sure what you mean when you say that I have the spindle set to drive on pin one.  Where is this set?
I have checked the following:
JP1 is set to the on position and the 407 is correctly oriented,  if the locating pin is supposed to in the center of the notch on the 422 connector.  I have measured the voltage of pin 26 on the 407 board and it is 4.69VDC
I tried temporarily configuring the PWM board to drive pin 16 and when the spindle button on the Mach4 screen is selected the real time pin 16 indicator does not change, it remains dark, however the pin 1 indicator turns green.

There is no response from the PWM or RUN LEDS on the 407 board when spindle button is selected.

I found the configuration page where the spindle was set to be driven from pin 1 and removed that setting.  The PWM and Run LEDs on the 407 illuminated and a Voltage proportional to the RPM setting appeared on the Aout terminal. Also the Run com and Run contacts closed.  The spindle did not move and the VFD required a couple of parameter changes.  The spindle is now working.  I was under the impression that the K1 contact could be used at the same time as the Aout signal for optional VFD controls such On/Off, spindle dir and coolant pumps. Thanks for your help..
