Stepper Motors & Driver Information

I have just purchased from you the following -
PMDX-424
PMDX-407
PMDX-179-PAN
I have also bought a 2 year old computer running Windows 10.
I am looking forward to getting everything up and running.
Question about Stepper Motors and Drivers - please see your comments below from a past topic - is the comment true, as long as the stepper motors and drivers are matched, they will work with the boards that I have bought from you?
Yes, this is a gantry machine with 2 motors moving the gantry.
Any direction in this area would be a big help!

Your past comments -
The 425 oz-in motors that you currently have are possibly a little
underpowered for a 4' x 4' router depending on how fast and hard
you need to cut. Hopefully this is a gantry machine with a tandem
setup moving the gantry.

More powerful motors would require upgrading to a NEMA 34 or
to NEMA 23 oversize 60 mm motors which typically have a 3/8"
shaft instead of a 1/4" shaft.

This is really two questions: will the drivers work with the PMDX-424, and will the drivers/motors work well in my machine.

The PMDX-424 works with pretty much *any* stepper driver as the interface is pretty standard.  The stepper drivers should have a step input (also sometimes called "pulse"), a direction input (sometimes called "pol" for polarity) and a "common", which is usually either ground or +5V.  Some drivers have "Pulse+" and "Pulse-", "Dir+" and "Dir-" (or maybe "Pol+" and "Pol-" for "polarity) in which case the "-" terminals can be tied together and connected to the PMDX-424 "COM" terminal.  The "Pulse+" goes to the PMDX-424's "Step" terminal and the "Dir+" goes to the "Dir" terminal.  Then configure the PMDX-SmartBOB plug-in to output "Ground (0V)" on the "COM" terminals.

Some drivers also have enable terminals.  You will need to refer to your stepper driver manual to see whether you need to connect these to anything, or can leave the un-connected to enable the stepper driver.

The issue of having the motors and drivers "matched" pertains more towards what kind of performance you will get from the machine.  I'll leave it to Steve or someone else to address the motor size issues, though it would help if you could tells us a bit about your machine (i.e. is it a 4' x 4'x router like the example you quoted?).

Regarding motors for your machine....

If you have a kit that is configured for NEMA 23 motors with 1/4 inch
shafts, then I would recommend proceeding with the 425 oz-in motors.
It may not give you the power of a stronger machine, but it is also
likely that the overall mechanical design of the machine has a strength
that is matched to the performance of motors with 1/4 inch shafts and
putting on stronger motors could cause other problems.
