I can't get my spindle to go.
« on: April 02, 2017, 02:40:01 PM »
I hear the little click when I tell it to spin or stop but nothing happens. I fear it might be that the Delta Series E VFD needs something done to it since I went from Chinese to the 424 and 407. I looked the manual up on line but really don't know anything about VFDs. I get "Error spindle speed set to zero" in Mach4 but I think I have Mach4 set correctly. Thanks, Bill

in another post that "The PMDX-407 uses an analog control voltage and simulated switch contacts
to control the VFD, so it interfaces in a very different manner." I didn't read anything in the 407 supplemental about anything analog. all that I have connected on the 407 is a wire to J18 common and to the VFD common. I didn't think the Analog instructions applied so I'll give this a try.

The sample profiles provided by PMDX are configured to control the
relay on the PMDX-424 to turn the spindle on and off. That is what
you hear when you start the spindle. You will find the configuration
for this under Output Signals under Configure > Mach. You should see
Spindle On mapped to the Relay. You can disable this signal so that
you do not activate the relay. The PMDX-407 will provide the needed
run signal on its J2 connector.  This needs to connect to the FWD and
DCM terminals of your VFD.

J2-Run to MI1 on the VFD
J2-Com to DCM on the VFD
Switch Sw1 on the VFD should be set to NPN

G-code selection of Forward and Reverse can be accomplished by using
the relay to route the J2-Run signal to either the MI1 or MI2 teminals
by using the Mach Output Signal called Spindle Reverse to control
the relay.

The PMDX-407 analog outputs will also need to connect as follows:

J3-Agnd to ACM on the VFD
J3-Aout to AVI on the VFD
J4-Aref to +10V on the VFD
Sw2 on the VFD should be set to AVI

You also need to configure the VFD to look for control signals on
its terminal strip. These settings are done with VFD parameter
02.00 and 02.01 and they are factory defaulted to 1 which is
correct for operation with the PMDX-407.

Last you should use Configure > Plugin-ins > PMDX-SmartBOB and select
the Spindle tab. Select the PWM mode under Spindle Speed Control and
then select PMDX-407 below that.

'm confused as usual. I read this:
The setup is simple, but we really should add this to the PMDX-407 information.

The Com on J2 of the PMDX-407 should connect to the Common of your VFD
interface. If you have the VFD working now, you have already done this.

The Run on J2 of the PMDX-407 should connect to the relay Com on J18 of
the PMDX-424 (or the Com terminal of any SmartBOB with a relay of any
external relay that you may add).

Connect the relay N/C on J18 of the PMDX-424 to the FWD input on your VFD.

Connect the relay N/O on J19 of the PMDX-424 to the REV input on your VFD.

Must be for a different setup other than I need for a simple 3 axis mill.
Thanks for resimplifing things for me. This stuff is all new to me,  Bill

The instructions that you are quoting are only needed if you expect
to control spindle direction using the relay, as I mentioned above.

If you only need Forward and Off modes, then connecting J2 directly
to the VFD is correct because the relay is not needed.

Thanks Steve, I'm good to go now. Everything is working and I'm happy. Thanks for leading me through it.  Bill
