PMDX-424/Mach4 Port Autoscan
« on: October 16, 2025, 11:25:14 AM »
I came back to my machine after about a week (the last job went fine, no issues), and I'm getting the error "Port auto-scan did not find a valid PMDX-SmartBOB-USB Device." As far as I know, nothing has changed with the machine, board, or computer since the last time I successfully used it. The machine had been completely unplugged in the meantime, so there were no surges or anything like that. Is there any easy solution that anyone can think of?

The PMDX-424 appears to be functioning normally - red status light with green light blinking every couple of seconds. The computer recognizes a device is plugged in, and the driver appears to be working fine - Device Manager>Ports(COM & LPT)>STMicroelectronics Virtual COM Port (COM3) is there without an error. I've also tried other USB ports on my computer, and have tried using a different USB cable. Debug log sent to the support email.

I even tried reinstalling the PMDXSmartBOBUSB setup file and it errored saying that a SmartBOB device was detected. It's like everything on my computer can see the board except for Mach4 all of a sudden.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Of course this happened at the worst time with a looming job. Posted here because I haven't heard a response back yet and I know how quick they usually are.

Thanks!

Since you are getting USB device acknowledgement from Windows and Device Manager shows the correct virtual Com port it is unlikely that you have a hardware problem.

I have tried installing your Debug profile on build 5036 of Mach4 (current released version) and it runs as expected.

There is a remote chance that something got corrupted in your PMDX plugin install.

It is normal for the plugin install procedure to complain about the SmartBOB being plugged in when you try to install the plugin. You should follow the prompt which tells you to unplug it and try again.

If this does not get you anywhere, you will find more tips about communications problems here:

Check out the first FAQ link.

If this does not help, I suggest trying a new install to test on a different computer. This install does not need a license installed to do this test.
